DVLA ISSUES URGENT WARNING TO DRIVERS 'DON'T FORGET' MAJOR RULE CHANGE THAT CAME IN TWO WEEKS AGO

The DVLA has reminded drivers planning to hit the road abroad this summer to familiarise themselves with the new regulations following a major shift in permit law at the start of April. The Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has urged UK motorists to be aware of the changes after a new rule was brought in two weeks ago.

Now, drivers can use PayPoint stores to obtain necessary documents. In a post on Twitter, the DVLA reminded: "Travelling abroad this summer and planning to drive? Don't forget, how you get an international driving permit has changed! Since April 1, 2024, IDPs are exclusively available from participating PayPoint stores across the UK."

A representative from Swansea Motor Group commented: "The recent changes announced by the DVLA are more than procedural; they are about ensuring that drivers have easy access to the necessary permits for safe and legal driving abroad. While the move to PayPoint outlets for IDP distribution is a significant change, it is also a reminder of the importance of staying informed about driving regulations, both domestically and internationally. As drivers adapt to this new system, they should remain vigilant about the requirements and ensure they are fully compliant before travelling."

Drivers planning overseas trips this summer are being reminded to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) if their destination requires one - with around 140 countries recommending or making them a legal requirement. Popular tourist spots including Australia, Canada, Mexico and Turkey all require IDPs, while nearby European destinations such as France and Spain do not. You can find a full list of countries requiring IDPs on the government's website.

PayPoint offers guidance on the IDPs drivers may require by stating on its site: "IDPs support a British or Northern Irish licence in countries where photographic proof of ID is needed, or where your licence alone may not be enough. There are 3 types of IDPs, and the right one for you depends on the country or countries you wish to drive in."
